Lytham Sixth Form College students went on a money-raising mission to bring in vital funds for a disability swimming team.

The 27 students from Public Services and Sport carried out a range of volunteering and charitable activities, including cleaning up St Annes beach, organising a charity football match and running a cycling event from Central Pier to Starr Gate in Blackpool.

In total, they raised £210 for the Fylde Sharks and presented representatives from the swimming team with a cheque during an event at College last week. Pam Young, from Fylde Sharks, said:

“It is refreshing to see so many young people thinking about and helping those less fortunate.

“The money raised will help to purchase equipment for Sharks' next project of snorkelling.

“Fylde Sharks works tirelessly for children with disabilities to reach their potential in the pool and it is through young people raising money and volunteering to help swimming instructors in the pool that our task is made so much easier.”

The activities came about from students taking part in National Citizenship Scheme (NCS), in association with Blackpool Football Club Community Trust.

Students were also involved in a Community Project at Blackpool Football Club’s Bloomfield Road stadium, learning the skills including first aid qualifications, project management and attending a “Look at Life” seminar.

Blackpool Community Trust’s social action team also attended the cheque presentation ceremony to thank the students for their hard work.

Mark Walker, Programme Leader in Public Services, Engineering and Computing at Lytham Sixth Form College, added:

“It is always a proud moment when students put the skills they have learnt at College into action to do something which benefits those in their community.

“Fylde Sharks is an excellent programme and all the students involved were delighted to have raised money to help the young people on the team to learn snorkelling skills.

“At Lytham Sixth Form College we think of ourselves as a committed part of this community and we encourage our students to get involved with worthy local causes and organisations – whether through their study programmes or extra-curricular activities.”

Lytham Sixth Form College offers career-focussed technical and professional education programmes in a range of subject areas in partnership with the Ofsted Outstanding Blackpool and The Fylde College.
